WOOD SIDING:
Wood Plank and Beveled Wood SidingWood clapboard siding is among the oldest types of home siding. You can see its beauty on older and historic homes. Its disadvantage is that it is not low maintenance, requiring painting and caulking and is often replaced with aluminum or vinyl siding. Frequently when that happens, a lot of the charm and detail of the wood home is lost.
So if you own a wood clapboard home you probably own a beautiful home, and as you know keeping it looking good requires taking care of paint problems and regular exterior paint maintenance. And there are often special considerations for painting historic homes.
Aesthetics
Wide variety of styles, textures and finishes.
Wood clapboard or beveled siding is horizontal and has overlapping joints.
Wood plank or board siding is vertical and comes in board and batten, board on board or channel-groove or tongue and groove styles.
Board siding also comes in a plywood version often called T-111® which is just exterior plywood with different face treatments and groove patterns to emulate a traditional board and batten design.Characteristics
Fairly easy to repair but difficult to install over existing siding.
Requires an exterior finish such as paint or stain.
Can be damaged by rot, insects, warping or splitting.Cost
Cost varies widely by type of wood species and style of siding and exterior finish.
T-111 is least expensive.
Generally moderate in price.Maintenance
Painted finishes tend to require higher maintenance and require good exterior house painting preparation.
Wood siding is prone to paint problems if the home is not properly ventilated.
Stained finishes usually require lower maintenance.
How to Choose Siding Contractors:
Siding is a material used to cover the surface of the exterior of a building. The purpose of siding is to protect against exposure to the elements, prevent heat loss, and improve the visually aesthetics of the facade. There are a number of different types of siding, including clapboard, horizontal lap siding, vertical board siding, and shingles. Wooden board and batten siding, sometimes found in Carpenter Gothic houses and very modest structures, differs from the common clapboard in that it consists of vertical wood boards with their butt joints covered by narrow strips, imparting a seamed appearance. Both aluminum and vinyl siding were developed as maintenance-free alternatives to wood clapboard. The appearance of aluminum and vinyl siding is similar to wood siding. Fiberboard, a pressed-wood-pulp product, is sometimes used, although it may have less durability. When homeowners want to have siding installed on their homes, they will turn to siding contractors to perform the labor involved. --How to Find Siding Contractors-- If you are considering installing siding on your home or building, you will need to hire a trained, qualified siding contractor to perform the labor. There are a number of resources available to you to find skilled siding contractors. The Internet can be an excellent resource. Online databases exist where you can enter information about your siding project, and be matched up with pre-qualified siding contractors in your area. Many siding contractors maintain an online presence via Internet listings, advertisements and websites. You may also want to ask for referrals from friends, family or neighbors who have used siding contractors in the past.
How to Choose Siding Contractors (continued)--Evaluating Siding Contractors-- Once you have located siding contractors in your area, you will need to choose the right one for your siding project. It’s a good idea to evaluate several contractors. Have each siding contractor come to the job site to inspect it, and provide price quotes based on your selected siding material. There are a number of questions you can ask to determine their abilities and skill level. Do they have experience in the type of siding material you are using? Are they licensed and insured? How long have they been in business? How many siding projects have they worked on? Ask to see before and after pictures of the jobs they’ve done in the past. Aldo ask for references, and call them to determine if they were satisfied with the services they received. Execute a contract specifying the work to be done, cost, payment schedule, start date and estimated completion date. Be sure that you read your contract carefully, and make sure that it includes the removal of old siding materials from the building, and from the site, if necessary. --Choosing Siding-- When adding siding to your home or building, you will need to consider the best type of siding to install. A skilled, qualified siding contractor may be able to help you with this decision. There are various factors to consider when choosing siding. Aluminum and vinyl are the least expensive options and have the added bonus of low maintenance. Wood clapboard and shakes are considered to be more upscale materials; however, they're more expensive and require ongoing maintenance, particularly if painted instead of stained. You may want to look at home design magazines and other houses in your community to see what various types of siding looks like, and get ideas for what you prefer. It is a good idea to obtain price quotes from several suppliers and/or home centers for the type of siding you've selected. Be sure to consult with your siding contractor before you make your final purchase, in order to confirm the quantity required for the job and make sure that the contractor you work with has experience with this type of siding. --Adding siding can make a huge difference in the look of your home or building. Be sure to choose a siding contractor who will do an outstanding job on your siding project.
